I wanted to make a thread about how versatile casters are and because of that what spells would be the most effective in a certain quest or area. There are a few threads about epic areas and i dont want to cover that here as i have no knowledge how to play a caster past high 20's. I also dont want just to buff an elemental and say just do that until 40 as i find that dull. Although it has its uses.
Level 4-6 Cast either (Owl, Fox or Eagle) and Protection from Alignment (if evil or good) and use Sleep to round up rats, gobbos, and bandits.
Level 7- 10 Use Cloud of Bewilderment and use panther familiar (if available) while doing Gate Guard quests. Can also use Animate Dead (skeleton) and farm basilisks using NEB and Ray to heal Skeleton. (Dont get hit by gaze)
Level 11-17 Either use Ring of Blinking or Ethereal Visage and Acid Sheathe and round up the red mountain giants. Getting a Blug DR item is beneficial and some multiple target spells to help kill them faster. Fight unarmed to draw Attacks of Oppurtunity.
Feel free to add more to this ... just a rough draft while i am at work.

Not too long ago certain spells were made friendly to your own pets for example and the caster , grease, and stonehold can't remember them all, this helped a lot, not sure if this is lost at the moment. Phastasmal killer works great on the red giants also, colour spray can help you get out of a bind also around there also, Red giants have evasion so try so try to avoid evocation with reflex saves on them, try to save up for master adventures robes at + 3 so 10 from arakan and the if you can wink ring of the apprentice from harata 5/ blud/slash/pierce this allows you to wear fear immune belt or you can use fear immune staff. that way you can also cast fear.
you can also use an extend invisible not improved invisible, round up the map with your familiar then extend a visage when they lure them back to your spot, extend a sheet since you don't have many slots this can help you clear a bit faster. be away if you get KD the giants can still hurt a lot with a critical so have some constitution buff or gear and some heal kits

Can confirm this is still the case. However, be wary as Grease is pet and summon friendly but it's not party friendly, so it's good for solo play but if you're in a party with melee characters they are not gonna be very happy when you cast it on their feet.

Fighting around Mountain Dwarf Town and Ogre Village I like to use the old Hold Monster or Hold Person spell on Ogres that have invaded the land and then have either a summons or pet destroy them, or you can cast some fireballs and magic missiles to kill them as well once they are held. To avoid getting stunned wth a stunning fist use a lesser mind blank or extended clarity spell. Around this level you can also use Defensive Spellcasting with Greater Concentration Gloves to prevent attacks of opportunity. I can't relay how effective it is at saving your ass by getting your spells off in a crunch!
Ice Giants Area It goes without saying that using a Fire Elemental for this area is a god send. But also using any fire spells, including Burning Hands to destroy the giants in this area. Remember your Summons and Pets are only the distraction for your spells to get off. Round up the ice giants using a Summons or Pet with invisibility and then Firebrand them all! Use Maxxed and Empowered Firebrands, Flame Arrows/Fireballs.
Fire Giant's Lair
It's hard to round up the elementals, but what I find works really well is Cone of Cold and Fingers of Death. Using a Water Elemental is useful as well. Prep some Spell Mantles or Lesser Spell Mantles or a Minor Globe of Invulnerability to avoid Flame Arrows from the casters. Round up the Fire Giants with a pet or summons and then Confuse or Fear them. then Cone of Cold or Ice Storm them for extra damage! I've seen Elaine of Penuary do this with great efficacy with the Confuse spell.
Purebloods Area It goes without saying that Lesser Mind Blank is THE spell to have for this area to avoid the Krensar attacks. Use Ball Lightning on the ogres and elder crazed giants. You can also use Hold Person on the hybrid ogres and giant ogres. Use a Protection From Elements or Energy Buffer to avoid the hybrid giant ogres sonic attacks. Once again, round up all the enemeis using invisibility and a pet or summons and then unload your fury of fireballs, etc. on them.

Epic Areas Necropolis It goes without saying that Undead to Death is a handy spell in here, prep it as Maxxed, Empowered, and Silenced, if you can. Also, Control Undead on a Giant Undead Monk is incredibly useful as a tank to support your spellcasting. To defeat the spellcasters, the Necro'Sa, using Chain Lightning to disrupt their spellcasting. They do not have haste items so can only cast one spell per round. Use a Summons if you must but I usually save one as a backup when things get rough and you need to retreat. A Fire Elemental works well in here. Defeat the Dracolich to gain entry to the western gate via the Hetempka quest from the merchant at the Oasis. There are also a number of free rest areas in this dungeon that are useful to know. I can't recall the exact locations right now but one of them has an NPC lich in it that also hands out a new quest for you to tackle the Aquasabiats.
Open Desert & Canyons Cliff fiends have a low fortitude so Wail of the Banshee and Finger of Death are highly effective on them. Prep a True Seeing so they don't Sneak Attack you. Asabiats you can keep as non hostile, which is what I recommend, by never completing the "Attempt for Peace" quest, unless you can negotiate a peace treaty without killing the Chief. Howver, to defeat these creatures use Bigby's Crushing Hand on the Warrior-Types, Bigbyu's Grappling Hand on the Archers, and Prep a few Spell Mantles for the Shamans, which will go down quickly with a Ball Lightning spell. They have mind immunity for some reason, I think it's inherent to their species so Hold Monster spells don't work on them as similar spells like Confusion or Fear.
Outkrata Labyrinth Once you're able to access the Wester Gate you can fight Minotaurs. Shamans like to dispel you with Greater Dispelling, counter it with a Spell Mantle which will absorb the dispel. Minos have low fortitude saves so Wail of the Banshee is useful as is Finger of Death and Hold Monster spells, then use a summons to kill them. For the Rothe I just use a summons or IGMS.
The Beholder Caves You may think that this area is impossible for a mage, but it's actually quite simple. You can use darkness spells to confound the beholders, but you can also use the ranged benefits of a Chain Lightning spell to kill them before they even see you. I encourage every spellcaster to try soloing these caverns as doing so can give you some great loot and xp rewards, especially since not alot of people like to go here because they don't want to get their buffs dispelled, which doesn't happen all too often.
Manonera City It goes without saying an Air Elemental is useful here, as is Wail of the Banshee (just be sure to not Wail any kobolds or Moma won't be happy with you and then you will need to use a Charm Monster or Person spell on her to gain her favour back in order to continue quests or get the code for the day) and Fingers of Death. For defeating the spellcasters, again use a Spell mantle to absorb their Greater Dispel spell and then ball lightning to kill them. I think the Manonera are susceptible to fire so flame arrow works wonders on them or fireball. Acid Sheath works well on them too even though they have some innate acid resistance. For archers use a Hold Monster spell at a distance.
Manoner aCity Forgies Areas For the spellcasters use a Spell Mantle to absorb their Greater Dispelling spell and then you can use a Greater or Lesser Breach to get rid of their spell mantles then Frost Arrow them to death. You can also Greater Dispel their aura if you want to, but it's not totally necessary. For the Forgies use a Bigby's Crushing Hand to stop them and then a Water Elementla to kill them or Ice Storm or Cone of Cold to kill them. For Gleeman you can use Bigby's Crushing Hand but it's not always successful. The way I deal with them is to breach their Etheral Visage so that the melees can attack them more thoroughly, and use a Water Elemental to tank them whilst you Frost Arrow them or Ball Lightning them.

Quick question for necropolis do the casters use dispel or mords? Was trying to reacquaint myself with the place and was constantly stripped of everything even by the skeleton devourers . I think the issue was more me using an empowered version of a lesser mantle instead of the lvl 9 variant. I’m probably wrong but could’ve sworn that those little buggers used to only spam NEB and not dispels as well but that’s a different issue lol.

The only caster's I've seen that use Mordenkainen's Disjunction are boss type characters, like the lich in the NC Crypts, mini boss-type characters, like the dracolichs in the NC Crypts, and Magesmiths,. If they are using Mord's on you you're prettyscrewed, but toss up another spell mantle anyways and continue the good fight. Additionally, it should be noted that Globe of Invulnerability and Lesser Globe of Invulnerability will also soak up a Dispel or Lesser Dispel spell. I rarely use Dispel myself because most of the casters will use a Spell Mantle on you. I prefer using Lesser Spell Breach against these types of casters.

Isle of Ice Use Greater Dispel or Dispel on the auras that the creatures have. You can Dominate the Hulks easily if you need an extra tank, otherwise use a Fire Elemental to bring them down hard and fast after you get rid of their auras with Dispel Magic, or do both options. Use Fireballs or Flame Arrows on the casting Imps and Spell Mantles to counter their dispelling on you. Next up you have the undead with Vorpal weapons - use your fire elemental in here to bring them down as welll as Sunburst to kill them quickly. It may sound scary at first, but it can and has been done before. After the undead caverns you have ice golems and other constructs to deal with. They are susceptible to fire magic. Try to make your way to the NW corner where you will find a cave that offers a free rest opportunity, but do not linger long because if you respawned on in that corner, all the creatures on the map will rush to that corner to defend it and you can easily get overwhelmed and die. So use the cae quickly and continue exploring the other maps. If you run into an winged elves just avoid them as they will rape you with their arrows, but IGMS works well on them if you do want to fight. If you're lucky you'll get to the entranceway to Azath. You can't solo Azath unfortunately, you will not have enough spells to complete the job, but if you got this far the entranceway to Azath is another free rest zone. Then you can work your way backwards and keep farming you lucky sod!

Senduanta Spider Queen Portal Area Someone else may be able to give furter insight, but from what I have been able to be witness to is that Wail of the Banshee works well in here against some of the spiders, your elemental smmons (fire I think works best) for the elder spiders, Cloud of Bewilderment will stun almost all the spiders (I think they have a weakness to the spell or something like that or it could just be poor fortitude saves), and IGMS. Do not use any Reflex Saving Throw spells as they have Imporved Evasion and high Reflex Saves so will take no damage from them. Ice Storm is another good option. Not sure how feasible this place is to solo as a mage, but it's fun to go down there with a nice group of peeps and farm them - they drop pretty great loot!

New Caendryll Areas Southeast Coastal Areas This areas are full of pirates. Some of the maps have one or two cleric casters on them. Round them all up with BBOD while you are invisible and then wail them all. Or for more asurety you can Confuse them all first, sicne they have low Will saves, and then Wail them, since they have relatively low fortitude saves. Don't use Chain Lightning or other reflex saving throw spells as they will just avoid them with their high Reflex saves and Improved Evasion.
Southwest Coastal Areas The Warriors are sneakers that have Death Attack. Use your Air Elementlal here. You can Wail with some great success here, but Hold Monster and Confusion are good here as well. For the casters, use a Spell Mantle to avoid their dispels. You can also use the BBOD and Invisibility then Confusion/Wail method to clear the map. For the cultitsts cave, once again BBOD while invisible and Confusion/Wail of he Banshee combo to get rid of them once they are gathered up. If there are any archers left behid just go and Finger of Death them or Hold Monster them for your Elemental to kill once you've cleaned out the rest of them.
