Buying haste pots is possible also.
Which are great early on imo.
Short lived but they can power you through some sticky spots early on to take advantage of great XP rewards much sooner then you normally would.
Fer spy and smith's come to mind.
Also friam.

Oh yeah - pre haste item - those speed pots are da bomb. Always keep them for the boss monsters when necessary.
And as a mage, "haste" was always the first third level spell I took.

General Tip: you can give haste pots (and all pots) to summons and pets, so even that little noobie boar created with the noobie summons wand you can purchase in noobie Wheaton for about 150 gold can be buffed with haste/strength/dex/con/ac by any noob, regardless of class.
