Farming the isle of ice - Ice Troll and Azath
Azath - farmed with pale master, wizard 9 fighter 1 pm 30, summoning and sancting.
If done normally, Azath has a undeath to death spell with a dc that tends to succeed against the summons. After a while I thought, if only there was a way to counter undeath to death...
Wait there is! Counterspelling!
I also noticed on the wiki it said counterspelling did not interrupt sanctuary mode. muahaha

Strategy:
Mordenkainen scrolls are helpful.
It is also important to have an elemental ring of resistance or 15 DR cold/fire/electric/acid for hellballs.
It is very important to have the arakan staff, as greater withering isn't really used that much here and that is the only item (I've found, it's pretty basic anyway) that has fear immunity. This helps when your mind blanks are dispelled.
You will also need a widget of cleared mind and drone summoning.
Stock up undeath to deaths with normal levels and metamagic, 4 should do it. Stock up on a greater dispell or two, 3 or so lesser and regular dispell, 2 mordenkainens, a flesh to stone, a great thunderclap and sunburst. That's usually what I do for counterspelling him. I also have shadow shields, 2 shades, 2 greater shadow conjurations, flame shield & energy buffer for hellballs (important), and mind immunity spells like clarity / lesser mind blank. 3 or 4 lesser spell breaches. After that its the regular empower spell mantle, true seeing, buffs, and negative energy rays.
Now because the summons are AI and you don't control everything they do, I've found a better way is to go to the upper left corner behind azath after entering. This is because it will attract the least amount of casters to the fight. More casters = more problems.
You enter in sanctuary mode, then go to that corner. You summon and can usually get one more spell off such as bulls strength or shades, then immediately counterspell azath (to be safe, you can summon then immediately set to counterspell azath). Because you are in sanct mode, the only thing he can see is the summon, and he usually begins with undeath to death so your counterspelling is the only thing stopping him. He might do a hellball and then another undeath to death right after so you can't counter it, that's fine just summon another undead.
Usually following that strategy you get him to the half hp mark easily.
When this happens he summons a caster or two to help him! It's important to have numbers on your side, so now you summon your first drone!
Also, your sanctuary will run out right about now, so don't hesitate to breach the casters with lesser spell breach or mordenkainen scrolls. If you breach them and you feel safe enough to not sanct ( you aren't being targeted) you might be able to get rid of one with undead graft if it's shadow shield is down.
After that, you can usually sanctuary and then continue to use summons and your last drone to fight azath or casters. It will usually be done after a while like that.
Sometimes your summons will be blinded, so restores or true seeing spells will help as well.
Here is a video showing this process twice (once at start and again at end, the ending one is shorter ).
